new machine...

Here it is, Monday....I have anxiously waited all weekend to quilt my beach quilt top, only to find myself frustrated and limited!! I know I have mentioned before that it is time for me to invest in a new machine, but I have trying to hold out until Christmas....now, I don't know how much more patience is in me!! I have spent the last few hours trying over and over to create this wave (that has been stuck in my head for awhile now), only to find myself pulling out numerous amounts of thread!! I am sure I am not the first to find themselves in this position. So what does a girl do?!?! I may just compromise with my machine on this quilt and stick with a straight stitch, but it is definitely time for a change. I have been trying to choose between a Janome and a Bernina, any suggestions on which would be a better choice?

That is what I am leaning towards right now. Thanks for your help.

  2. I've got my mom's Bernina that is 20+ years old (1030) and it's such a workhorse. I'm ashamed to say that I cleaned it for the first time since I've had it (a few years) and haven't gotten it serviced, and it's still consistent.

My one suggestion if you're going to quilt, is invest in something that has a big throat. While my machine is awesome, it could definitely use more room for machine quilting.

I am happy to hear that you are using your mom's machine, it is one of the selling points I gave my husband when telling him about the Bernina. That one day it will be what our daughter Izzy sews with!

I would love to get the one with the 12 inch throat (because I only know too well how hard it is to get a big quilt through a small one), but I have to admit that is even more than I think I can stomach paying! I went and played with the Berninas at a dealer today, I have to tell you that it felt like I was test driving a Porshe. Amazing!!

  4. Yep, I won't even let myself try the ones at my local quilt shop, because I know my husband would have a heart attack if he saw the $3,000+ price tags! Good luck in your search, and maybe look at getting a used machine too.

  5. Have you looked at a Janome 6500? I have one and REALLY like it. It was $1100 a few years ago.
